Buddhism has at its heart a very positive view of humanity, and what is possible for us and the world. It is also a very practical religion, giving step-by-step guidance on how to live a more heartfelt and meaningful life, leading to our own and others’ happiness and well-being. And you don’t have to be a Buddhist to take something of immense value into your life.
Come along if you are at all interested in how or whether the ideas and practices taught two and a half thousand years ago, and refined over the millennia can bring a positive change to your life.
The course is designed to build up a clear picture, week by week, so it is best if you can commit to the whole thing – but if life intervenes, don’t let that put you off attending when you can.
The ideas we are investigating will be presented under the following topics:
The Practice: We will be exploring how to set up a daily practice, and some of the key ideas behind the different elements you can choose from, for example, motivation and dedication, refuge, offerings and purification. And crucially, how to set up a practice that is do-able and meaningful.
Meditation: We will give instruction in a simple meditation practice, with ideas how it can be developed.
Discussion: Key to all this will be space for discussion and questions – this is the only way to make a practice real to us.
As we go along, there will be handouts of the meditations, and some key ideas, as well as suggestions for further reading, if you wish to go further with your investigation.
