All the problems and difficulties that we face in our daily lives are, from a Buddhist point of view, rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of reality. Things appear to exist more solidly, permanently and independently of each other than is actually the case.
This fundamental misunderstanding gives rise to all the other afflictive states of mind that cause us problems: anger, jealousy, and greed, for example. The main antidote to this is the ‘Wisdom of Emptiness’, which helps us appreciate a world filled with a wondrous interdependence that extends to our own mind and awareness.
During this module we will be exploring (through presentation, discussion and meditation) different philosophical approaches to emptiness/selflessness and how we can apply these practically to reduce problems in the here and now, as well as leading us towards eventual liberation and enlightenment.
